Airstream, the legendary recreation vehicle company known for its sleek, silver bullet trailers, has just unveiled its first all-electric travel trailer. The Basecamp 20Xe was launched on March 1, 2025, a welcome development in the drive for all-electric vehicles built to go off-grid and stay off-grid longer.

The Basecamp Xe model, which can sleep four, expands upon the compact Basecamp 20 Travel Trailer floor plan designed for off-road adventures. It takes it a few giant steps further with this zero-emission vehicle, expressly designed for extended trips and independent living.

Solar Power & A Large Battery Bank

The Basecamp 20Xe has some striking innovations, including built-in solar power. The travel trailer comes with 600W of rooftop solar panels and a solar prewire port where another 300W of solar panels can be plugged in to boost solar harvesting capabilities when you’re off-grid. That’s combined with a fully inverted electrical system, a 30Amp system with a 3,000W inverter, and a 10.3kWh battery bank. That can provide enough power to explore remote locations while running the optional air conditioner and microwave. The fully inverted system ensures that every outlet is functional, allowing seamless use of laptops, phones, and other essential devices. You can also set up a remote workstation and use the ethernet Smart Plug port on the exterior, allowing a connection to various satellite internet providers.

While the Basecamp 20Xe has been designed with electric-first capabilities, it also comes with a 20-pound reserve propane tank as a backup fuel source. The combined water heater and furnace system can operate on multiple fuel settings, thanks to a Truma Combi eco plus system, including all-electric, all propane, or a mix of both. In addition to serving as an alternative fuel source, the trailer’s small propane tank supports outdoor grilling via an exterior low-pressure LP port.

Among its other off-grid features, the 20Xe has water conservation features. It has a recirculating water feature that reduces waste by redirecting cold water into the fresh tank until it reaches the desired temperature. If you want to go a bit further with water conservation, an optional composting toilet is available as an upgrade.

Nearly 70 years since the first Airstream was built, the same aerodynamic principles have been applied to the design of the Basecamp. That translates to low wind resistance when you’re heading down the road.

Designed for Off-Grid Adventures

It may be relatively lightweight, but this trailer has been built for challenging terrain and comes with a standard Airstream X package. It has a single axle, rugged tires, black protective rock guards, and a 3-inch lift, with the aim of letting you venture further afield.

Designed for those who love adventure, the Basecamp 20Xe’s 20-foot floor plan is designed for versatility, offering a dedicated sleeping space in the back and a convertible dinette up front for additional sleeping options. A portable burner 1500W induction cooktop can be removed and used outdoors. The three-speaker JBL Audio Sound System means you can take your entertainment with you.

Other features include the L-Track mounting points for hanging wet gear in the shower. For all the sporting gear you might need, the 20Xe has additional storage space below a hatch in the floor, a space that also has a drain and can double as a cooler.

The Basecamp 20Xe starts at $76,900. Go to Airstream for more information.
